EAI Mail testbed

Standcore has created an EAI self-hosting testbed, in cooperation with the Universal Acceptance Steering Group.

Installing and using the EAI self-hosting testbed

The mail testbed is a collection of scripts to run on a Debian or Ubuntu linux system, typically on a virtual private server. The scripts install and configure a small EAI mail system to use for experimentation and education. It consists entirely of open source software so users are welcome to modify and extend it.

To use it, the user first has to set up a server running Debian 12 or Ubuntu 22 or 24 linux on a server that allows mail to be sent and received on the standard port 25. Then he or she selects a domain name for the server, and optionally a different domain name for the mail addresses, and adds those name(s) to the DNS, referring to the newly created server. Then he or she logs into the server using a standard ssh client, fetches the insstall script, and runs it. The script prompts for the domain names(s) and names of mailboxes. It configures the server including the mailboxes, and when complete the user can log into the server for webmail, or configure mail clients using the standard POP, IMAP, and SUBMIT protocols.
